Queen of the Fairies!

Happy Valentines 2010!

Another redo of a drawing that was done back in the day (also known as 2006). With this one, i decided to add a little bit more design to the outift by implementing hearts into the stockings and corset. . Overall, i'm happy with it and it does show that i have made SOME progress!

"In the year twoooo thooousaaand.............and ten"

I just wanted to give a special thanks to those out there that continue to support me and my art. It's probably the one thing that I'm most grateful for in life, so a million thanks go out to each and every one of you! I really appreciate it and here's to making 2010 a stellar year!

BelleChere!

Well, it's 2010 now and what's a better way to start the new year off right then by showcasing another fantastic and creative mind in the comic world. This month, it's the lovely and award-winning BelleChere. Probably one of the sweetest and most gifted cosplayers that i've ever had the chance to meet. I'm still in awe of her Dawn costume that won the Dawn Look-Alike Contest in 2008!

Check out her amazing work here:

New Year's Wolvie

A sketch i did of Wolverine for a friend's New Year's Eve get together. Everyone brings in something that they have made (i.e a drawing, sculpture, painting, etc) and they trade with one another. Overall, i think it's an ok sketch. I mean, there are errors all over the place in it, but it's not too bad right? lol

Ruby: Old vs New!

While messing around today on Deviantart, i started going through some of my old drawings. Man, some of these things are pretty painful to look at now! I seriously wanted claw my eyes out on some of these things! As a test to see how much i've grown as an artist, I attempted to redraw a few of my drawings. This is the first, based on a old drawing of my "mascot", Ruby Chaos, from June of 2006:
The full sized version of the old drawing can be viewed here:
I have a few more in the works (plus i plan on adding a background to this one). So far, it's been a pretty fun experience redoing some of these old pics. I might just have to start doing this every couple of years...

3 out of 10?!?!? Really?!

A while back, i posted this blog entry:

10 characters that I want to draw before the end of the year:
1. Storm (classic design)
2. Invisible Woman
3. Phoenix (or Dark Phoenix)
4. Ulala (from Space Channel 5)
5. Black Canary
6. Gum (from Jet Set Radio)
7. Brandy and/or Jen (from Liberty Meadows)
8. Empowered
9. Sister Grimm (from Runaways)
10. Catwoman

Out of that entire list, I only managed to draw about three of those characters, being Catwoman, Ulala, and Phoenix (well, Invisible Woman could be in there. I mean, I could just say that a normal, white piece of paper counts as a drawing of her using her powers...ok I'll stop). Talk about slacking! So, with the new year approaching, I think it's time to make a new list of characters that I PLAN on drawing for the year of 2010:

1. Atom Eve (from Invincible
2. Elastic-Girl (from The Incredibles)
3. Brandy or Jen (from Liberty Meadows)
4. Molly or Sister Grimm (from Runaways)
5. Bayonetta (that one is going to be tooooooooough!)
6. Felicia (from Darkstalkers)
7. Storm (Classic Design)
8 Loki (in female form, just because I haven't done a full body version yet)
9. The Baroness
10. Dejah Thoris

Here's to hoping that by this time next year, i'll have at least 7 of these done.

Pixar = Death?!

So, at lunch today, i pixed up the Pixarpedia from the local bookstore. It's a pretty awesome book, filled with pictures and biographies of all of Pixar's films and shorts. Not only that, but it has a listing for pretty much EVERY character that has ever appeared in these films, no matter how important or non-important they are. Want to find out what all the little robots were called in Wall-E? This thing has it. Ever wanted to learn info about the various heroes in the Incredibles that were briefly mentioned? This book covers all of that! If you haven't checked it out, you should definitely take a look at it. To keep in the spirit of Pixar, i sketched up a couple of Pixar-related cards for fun:
The cast of Monsters Inc.

Syndrome from The Incredibles

And last, but not least (and completely off topic)...

Death (from DC/Vertigo's Sandman)

Lydia

Lydia from Beetlejuice

I tried to make her a bit older (like she was in the film) instead of having her as a kid (like she was in the cartoon series). I also tried to make her look a little bit more like Winona Ryder because...well....that's who played her in the movie.

Have you seen the awesome costumes of Miracole yet?! If doesn't matter if your answer is yes or no, head on over to www.miracole.com and see some of her outstanding work. I was lucky enough to see her in her Baroness costume at Dragon*Con this year and its a sight to behold! Completely spot on with the character (but then again, all of her costumes are!)

The Drowning of Ophelia

Drowned Ophelia from Brutal Legend.

What an awesome character from an awesome game.

I drew this about a month ago, but never colored it. I tried something a little bit different by basically using the airbrush tool for her skin instead of just using flat shades and gradients. Slowly, but surely, i'm trying to import new things into my art, to get out of my "comfort zone" hopefully. Who knows...maybe there might even be backgrounds in my drawings in the near future? lol

(Actually, this drawing did have a background planned, but i admit it. I got lazy AND my hand started giving me issues a little bit. One thing I have a BIG problem with is finishing a drawing all in one sitting. I know that I probably shouldn't, but i just get all wrapped up in it and excited to be producing a new piece, especially since they have been few and far between lately)

Sketchcards like crazy!

A compilation of all of the sketch cards that I have done recently, plus a few new ones thrown in there for good measure. Can you name all of the characters?!?!

Decapitaaaaaaaaaaaatiooooooon!

Eddie Riggs from Brutal Legend! How awesome is this game! I haven't had this much fun with a game in a looooooooong time. Great characters, great storytelling, an incredible soundtrack and a overall fun experience that is second to none! If you haven't tried it out yet, do what you have to do to play it (well....keep it within the law ;-)

It's so chilly down below...

Hell has officially frozen over. I have a Twitter account:

http://twitter.com/bigchrisgallery

The King of all Wild Things

Just in time for the movie!

One of my favorite children's books of all time.

Ack! Ack! Ack! Ack!

Well, the old drawing hand has it's good days and it's bad days. Luckily, today was a decent one and I was able to get a sketch card done to help get back into the swing of things. This one is of Lisa Marie as the Martian Woman from the cult movie (and hopefully, one day, a classic) Mars Attacks. I know there's a lot of people out there that really didn't "get" or like the movie, but, for me, it's one of my all time favorites. Truly hilarious and just all out mayhem! Not only that, but it had a GREAT cast!

The Martian Woman had to be one of the coolest costumes I had ever seen, at the time, and it still holds up pretty well today. Oh, how I would kill to see someone cosplay as this. That's a true challenge right there, especially if they try to get her "walk" down.

On a side note, last weekend was 24 Hour Comic Day. My hats off to those that participated because you all are greater men and women than me. I'll be honest, I just don't have the discipline for it. When I draw, it's pretty much in spurts. I'll go for about 4 hours and then just stop for the rest of the day. To do it for 24 hours straight (and to be awake, for that matter) is just astounding and damn near impossible for me lol. It also requires a sheer amount of talent that I just don't have, so to those that actually did it last weekend, you all deserve a pat on the back and a "job well done" chant. One of these days, i'd like to try one out, but I think that i'm going to have to work my way up to it and go on a strict training regimen (similar to the movie "Rocky").

Loki!

The new and improved Loki.

Man, do i love this character as a female. It just added an entirely new element of evil to him (or her, as the case may be now). The character design is flawless! It's going to be a sad day when Marvel gives her up and returns Loki to his previous form.

Vampirella

You know something? I have never drawn Vampirella. I've never even sketched her....ever! So, i felt, with it basically being October now, that it was time to give it a shot! Not only that, but this is the first completed drawing that i've done since my hand injury. It took a little while, but it's something right?

On a side note, my art page on Facebook has magically disappeared! I don't seem to be the only victim, as quite a few other pages that i'm a fan of are missing as well! What the @#@#
(EDIT: Apparently, my art page is back now. Facebook is quite the moody little thing)

Dragon*Con 2009 pics!

Pics from this year's Dragon*Con!

Lucky there's a Family Guy.

More oldies!

This were supposed to go in this year's sketchbook as well, but i didn't have room for it. I tried drawing specific cartoon characters in my own style just to see how they would turn out. I wasn't too happy with the results, but i guess its a good start to trying something different for a change...

Hand Update: The hand is doing a bit better. I still hurts like crazy when I life or do anything that applies any real pressure to it BUT i'm actually able to start sketching now. I can't draw over long periods of time just yet, but i am making progress here!
Thanks to everyone out there who showed concern about it! I really appreciate it :-)

The Mistress of UltraPrison

Third on the list is a lesser known character from Adult Swim's Superjail, the Mistress of UltraPrison. I admit, i'm not specifically a fan of SuperJail, but thought that she would be an awesome character to at least sketch out. That rough sketch turned into the rough drawing that you see right here. I did this months ago, around the same time the Eris and Lindsay drawings. Originally, for my sketchbook this year, i was going to have a least two pages of miscellaneous Cartoon Network characters in a model sheet type of drawing. That never panned out (due to my slowness), so half of the drawings are still sitting here in my computer just waiting to be colored.

Ms. Selina Kyle

Next up is Ms. Selina Kyle, a.k.a. Catwoman. I swear, i must have at least 5 unfinished Catwoman pieces floating around here at my desk, but this had to be my favorite (hence why it's colored now. lol).

Marvel Girl

So, while the old hand is healing up, i thought i should start coloring the numerous amount of drawings that i have laying around and scanned into my computer. First up is the uncanny Marvel Girl herself, Jean Grey. This has to be one of my all time favorite costumes in comics. I mean if you think about it, Jean Grey has had a few of the coolest costumes in comics, especially this one and her Phoenix/Dark Phoenix costume. It's too bad that she has died more times in comics than there are Police Academy movies. Hopefully, Marvel will bring her back into mainstream comics again in the near future.

On a side note, did anyone pick up the X-men Legacy Annual that came out this past week? I have to say that Rogue's new costume is a definite A+ in my book! Maybe i just have a thing for scarves. I will say that when my hand heals up, that it will most defintely have to be put into a drawing!

Injury! Injury!

My apologies for the lack of updates lately. A few weeks ago, i was helping a friend move and had a little accident. During the move, a couch was dropped and landed on my left hand...my drawing hand at that! Hoping that it wasn't fractured or broken, i went to get an x-ray last Thursday. Turns out that nothing is broken or fractured, but the bones and muscles in my hand are just bruised really bad. My entire hand just feels stiff, sore, and achy, like its aged 20 years right before my eyes. It's getting better but it just feels like it's taking forever! lol It hurts to draw right now, so i'm just taking it easy. It sucks though, because after going to Dragon*Con this year, i have a severe itch to draw like crazy (as well as projects to finish).

The Goddess of Copics!

I can't believe I missed posting this! I did this right after FX this year. It was one of my first completed sketches with Copic Markers. Fitting that it was of one of my all time favorite villains in comics, Loki (the female version, that is!)

Siren and Sketchcards

Yet another obscure character from my childhood

Not many of you out there will probably remember her. She was a sidekick to the Riddler in one episode of the 1960's Batman show with Adam West. She was played by Joan Collins and she had the ability to hypnotize men with her "siren's song". Funny thing is that i absolutely had NO idea that it was Joan Collins until now, when i found reference pics of the character. Fun fact that i didn't know until recently as well: She was the ONLY Batman villain on the show that actually had natural super powers.

Two points to those out there that actually remember her and the episode. ;-)

Yeah, i know that i've been doing sketch cards like crazy and not enough colored pieces as of late. I'm going to do my best to change that after Dragon*Con. I think that my artistic batteries need to be recharged a bit and that's just the place for that to happen. Another thing is that i'm trying to have a $#!@ load of sketch cards ready to sell at some conventions next year. My goal is to have about 100 done by next May. Not so hard, but coming up with 100 different characters to draw might be a bit tricky. I will say that with each card, it does seem to get a little bit easier. Maybe thats a sign that i'm getting better? Who knows!

Clowns, Nymphs and Gorillas...Oh My!

First on the menu is the Clown Prince of Crime himself, The Joker! I've never actually drawn the Joker before, but have always wanted to. For my first time, i don't think it's too bad. He's a tricky devil to draw, that's for sure. I will say that he's probably THE best villain in comics ever. Hands down.

Next up is one of my favorite Batman villains, the lovely Poison Ivy. I based my drawing on Brian Bolland's version of the character, but added a little bit of my own twist to her. I tried to make her a bit more nymphish than how other artists have portrayed her in the past. She always seemed like she should look like a very playful, but sultry character on the outside, but on the inside, she is a devious, determined individual who always gets what she wants. I also based her face and physique a little bit off of Christina Hendricks from Mad Men, who i feel is one of THE most stunning women (and stunning redheads, for that matter) in Hollywood right now. In the future, i hope to do a fully colored Poison Ivy piece based completely on her likeness.

Last, but not least is Tracy from Filmation's Ghostbusters. Even though it was overshadowed by The Real Ghostbusters cartoon, it's still one of my favorites from the 80's. Yeah, the animation and story lines were typical Filmation, but i absolutely loved the character designs. Who doesn't love a giant ape in a hat and shorts that drives a supernatural jeep and busts ghosts? Classic, i say! Classic!

"Tricked out Name Tag"

My most obscure sketch card yet- Flo from the Progressive Auto Insurance commercials!

Hey, i like Flo.

"It's over, Prime..."

Let's face it. Transformers the Movie is my all time favorite movie. Laugh all you want, but it's probably the movie that i have watched the most throughout my entire life. I must have seen it over 100 times (including tonight, as i JUST finished watching it). I was a huge Transformers fan when i was kid and that movie was like the pinnacle of everything for me. The fight scene between Optimus Prime and Megatron was one of the coolest things ever to witness as a kid. Yeah, it's just a cartoon, but to me, its something that was (and is) truly epic. Not only that, but it's the movie that really inspired me to want to start drawing comic and cartoon styled art. So basically, every drawing that you see on this blog is, in a way, a result of that movie (well, that and Ninja Turtles, but that's another story for another time....)

"Mother Brain will get you, little princess...ahahaha!"

Mother Brain from the fantastic Captain N: The Game Master cartoon. What a cartoon! I remember watching it every saturday morning when i was a kid and just being in awe. All of my favorite video game characters, coming together and going on crazy adventures. Watching it today, it still holds up pretty well and some of the designs on that show were just so unique and different. Castlevania! Megaman! Punch-Out! Hell, there was even an episode about Tetris and Paperboy! This show had it all! Ahhh, the memories.....

"We are the Misfits. Our songs are better..."

Here's another one for the ladies (and the fellas, like myself, who have the balls enough to actually admit that they watched Jem).

Pizzazz, leader of the Misfits and uber nemesis to Jem and the Holograms.

Call me, beep me, if you wanna reach me...

Kim Possible has to be one of my all time favorite Disney animated series. It's right up there with Gargoyles, Darkwing Duck, Aladdin, Gummi Bears and Hercules. The big question is what is the hold up on having some season box sets hitting store shelves?!?! I know i'm not the only one out there asking for this, right?! :-)

More Flashback sketchcards!

Demona from Gargoyles

Sketchbooks, Dragon*Con and a little Shulkie!

With my personal life finally being in order and coming together, i've started to get drawings together for my 2010 sketchbook! I know, its a bit early for it, but i don't want to rush it like it did last years. While i was happy about how this years turned out, i knew it could be better. I'm thinking about making this one around 40-50 pages in full color (well, except for the pages with ACTUAL sketches/sketchcards on it). What i need are ideas for characters to draw for it. What character would you like to see me draw for the book?

Also, i will be at Dragon*Con in Atlanta this year! I'll be heading up there with Ms. Mars and some of my good friends to enjoy one of the craziest cons of the year! Be on the look out for me in a Big Chris' Gallery t-shirt and feel free to come up and say hi!

Finally, let's top it off with a She Hulk sketchcard!

Cheetara

One of my favorite characters from the 80's! I really, really need to get my stuff together and do a full sized colored drawing of her.

Obscure!

Talk about obscure! During today's sketching session, i thought it might be fun to do a couple of cartoon characters that i hadn't seen drawn in a while. First off was Bananaman. Do you remember those old Nickelodeon shorts with this guy in it, about the kid that eats a banana and becomes a superhero? Yeah, i didn't think so lol. (and is it me, or did i make Bananaman look like John Lithgow?!?!)
Next is former pro athlete Bo Jackson from that old cartoon ProStars. It featured him, Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky fighting supervillians (and showing the important of teamwork and other feel good mumbo jumbo that you would see in an afterschool special).

Yeah, i know these won't go over too well and no one probably remembers either of these shows, but hey, i thought it would be fun to do something a bit different ;-)

Superfriends was probably the show that actually got me interested into comic book characters. It was my first introduction to such icons as Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman. It also introduced to one of my favorite duos in comic animation history: The Wonder Twins! It's only fitting that i had to do a piece of the lovely Jayna!

The Gatekeeper

"There is no Dana. There is only Zuul!"

Ulala's Swingin' Report Show!

I absolutely love Space Channel 5! Probably one of the most fun and addictive games i have ever played. I think that one of the main reasons i always liked the game is because i like dance movies. While i'm not too big on musicals, dance movies have always caught my eye (especially since i can't dance a lick to save my life). The entire premise of the game seems like one big dance movie crossed with that old kid's game, SIMON. The music is catchy and jazzy and Ulala has to be one of the coolest video game heroines ever! I still get flack to this day for liking this series so much, but hey, you can't knock good game design ;-)

Silver Sable

The lovely Silver Sable.

*I promise that some NEW colored pieces are on the way soon ;-)*

Jenny

Bucky O' Hare was probably one of the most underrated cartoon series of the early 90's. Not only that, but it had a spectacular comic series that was drawn by the legendary Michael Golden! It's only fitting that i had to draw my favorite character of the series, The Aldebaran first mate of the Righteous Indignation, Jenny!

Azkadellia

Azkadellia from the Sci Fi Channel's miniseries, Tin Man. I was a big fan of this series when it aired a couple of years ago. Azkadellia was one hell of a villain!

The lost Adam Warlock

So i received an email today from someone stating that they had one of my sketch cards from last year's Marvel Masterpieces set! This particular card is of Adam Warlock. I will say one thing... it's really painful to look at my sketch cards now, because i absolutely had NO idea what the hell i was doing! It was my first time and i was really intimidated to be doing cards with such an awesome variety of artists who i have admired for years. Not only that, but didn't even know what tools to use, so it basically came down to just crappy pen and pencils. UGH! Thank God i have improved some since then and hopefully i'll get the chance to take a crack at some more actual sketch cards in the near future.

I know there are at least 20 more cards that i didn't post pictures of floating around somewhere out there. Maybe some more will turn up one of these days...

(Special thanks to Paul for emailing me this)

Krondor Krew!

One of my sketches from the June Dr. Sketchy's event at Tatame Sake Lounge in Winter Park, FL is being used in the logo for Krondorkrew.com. Here's some info on these gnarly ninjas:

Krondor Krew is the worlds pre-eminent ninja hip-hop duo.

Since 2002,they have been perfecting their deadly art of lyrical ninjitsu, viciously slinging wicked ninja-based raps in every direction of South Florida, and winning over every audience they perform for. Shinobi and Masurao take their art form to high levels of visual and audio content. Each song is written with performance in mind, both emcees giving the immense amount of their energy to the stage show when performing. No audience has left a Krondor Krew performance unamazed.

Signed to EMPulse Records in June 2008, Krondor Krew have the tools, abilities, and ninja soldiers to take over any show, blast the system to full capacity, and leave the crowd cheering in excitement.

Dr. Sketchy's Orlando

An awesome artist, Ray Richardson (http://www.myspace.com/rayseeart), turned me on to a drink and draw event known as Dr. Sketchy's, right here in Orlando (well, technically Winter Park, Fl). It takes place at the Tatame Sake Lounge on the first Wednesday of every month. At each event, they have a live model who does a series of poses for the artists to draw from. This event was graced with the pressence of the beautiful Laila from Orlando Bellydance. At the end of the night, they have a contest to decide the best sketch of the night. As luck would have it, on my first night, i actually won. Here's my sketch:
I'm really getting into this whole Drink and Draw thing. My first experience with it was at the FX International this year. It's just an awe-inspiring experience to be sitting next to (or at least in the vicinity) of some of my heroes such as Sean "Cheeks" Galloway (who probably has to be THE nicest guy i have ever met. That man has a halo over him or something), Dan Panosisan, Jim Mahfood, Jim Cheung and Dave Johnson. I will say that i was humbled in about .03 seconds after seeing some of the stuff they were coming up with at the event. Just amazing and they did it with such ease!

If there is an event like this in your area, i encourage artists everywhere to go to it. It's such an awesome experience and its a sure fire way to get you out of any drawing funk that you have bene in. It surely did for me (hence all of the sketch cards recently).

"This IS ripping! I'm a Buzzsaw Girl!"

Finally! A color piece! It's Buzzsaw Girl from that old NES game, The Defenders of Dynatron City! I do remember that, years ago, it had a kickass animated special. The animation was pretty spectacular and could have made an awesome early 90's animated series. Ahh well.....
